We've once again brewed Monk's Blood as part of our Insurrection Series, which is an occasional release series throughout the year.  Monk's Blood is a dark Belgian-style strong ale brewed with Belgian candi sugar, vanilla beans, cinnamon, dried mission figs and aged on oak. We released this beer last year in a four pack 12 ounce cans. The original recipe was part of a collaboration brew with Sean Paxton The HomeBrew Chef , brewed for Strong Beer Month in February 2009. In May of that same year, Sean, Nico and Shaun went to Belgian to the De Struise Brouwers in West Flanders, Belgian, where the collaboration took on more nuances with the help of the maverick brewer from De Struise, Urbain Coutteau.

With Ostriches running around on the De Struise farm, many well aged bottles and meat tartare were consumed into the wee hours of the night. On the same trip, Sean, Nico and Shaun took day trips to De Dolle Brouwers in Essen, Belgian where they gained further inspiration from Kris Herteleer the brewmaster, who brought rare treats and samples from the fermenters. Then onto Brugge with Daisy at the 't brugs beertje and Rodenbach Grand Cru in  Roeselare. We finally made it back to the States and took Monk's Blood out to the production brewery in Cold Spring, MN, where we packaged it in both four pack cans and draft. Monk's Blood has a rich malt aroma, slightly fruity, with notes of dark figs and oak tannins at 8.5% ABV. Whether it's your cup of tea you can't deny that it is one of the most interesting cans of beer you will ever enjoy. It was also rated as one of the top 25 beers of 2010 by Draft Magazine. Cheers.
