El Sully: The King of Cream Ales
Let’s talk about one of our favorite brews, El Sully. This Mexican-Style Lager took home a Silver Medal in the American Cream Ale category at this year’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF)! With a crisp and refreshing profile, El Sully has become a fan favorite (and brewery favorite) nationwide—and the judges agree.
But, this isn’t El Sully’s first rodeo. This award completes the trifecta of GABF medals:
- Gold in 2016
- Bronze in 2018
- Silver in 2024
And the awards don’t stop there. El Sully, the most awarded brew in our portfolio, also took home the Bronze Medal for American Cream Ale at the 2023 World Beer Cup.
At first glance, it might seem puzzling that a beer called El Sully Mexican-Style Lager consistently wins in the cream ale category. However, when we look deeper into the style guidelines for cream ale, we see that it’s actually a hybrid of ales and lagers. These crisp, refreshing beers are fermented warm with either ale or lager yeast and then lagered cold. This means both yeast types—ale and lager—can be used in brewing, allowing for a unique flavor profile to be achieved.

In its debut year, Amendment Lager (4.4% ABV) made waves at the 2024 World Beer Cup, snagging the coveted Gold Medal in the American-Style Cream Ale category. This light lager has quickly risen to fame—it’s smoother than your best pickup line and more reliable than your GPS.
